A biometric ATM
helps Indian Bank reach rural, unbanked population
Expanding its presence beyond the metropolitan areas of
India as well as finding a way to serve a large population where
most do not use or understand basic banking services posed a
considerable challenge for Indian Bank. With more than two-thirds of
the Indian population living in rural areas, the bank saw an
opportunity to expand its presence while providing a much-needed
service to this segment.
A recent
case study (PDF) highlights how
Diebold's biometric ATMs helped Indian Bank provide banking services
at an affordable cost to India's unbanked population and allow rural
residents to manage their finances better and more securely. Indian
Bank's biometric ATM utilizes fingerprint scanning technology to
identify and authenticate customers, along with voice-prompted
instructions to walk consumers through transactions. Customers have
access to all the features of a traditional Indian Bank ATM
including cash and check deposits, balance inquiries and account
statements.
Because of its success, Indian Bank plans to install an additional
100 Diebold biometric ATMs by 2010.
National
Exchange Bank is first in Wisconsin to deploy
Opteva 720 ATM
National Exchange Bank and Trust (NEBAT), a financial institution
with 27 locations throughout Northeastern Wisconsin, recently became
the first bank in the state to deploy a Diebold Opteva® 720 ATM with
envelope-free deposit capabilities. The ATM is located in Festival
Foods, a new grocery store in Fond du Lac, Wis.
“We are in the process of updating our branches to
have a modern look and provide more self-service options for our
customers,” said Trudi Marquardt, vice president, operations, NEBAT.
“The Opteva ATM helped us achieve both of those goals. It has a
futuristic appearance and features check capture and bulk note
acceptance capabilities, two technologies that are relatively new to
this region.”
To introduce the new technology, bank associates
assisted customers with transactions for one week. According to
Marquardt, reactions were quite favorable, and many were impressed
by the ATM’s advanced capabilities.
Not only is the new ATM beneficial to the bank in
that it takes the human factor out of processing deposits, it
benefits customers because it is accessible 24 hours a day and
allows them to verify their deposits. “Customers find comfort in
seeing the image of a check on the screen, verifying that it is the
correct amount and then depositing it,” Marquardt said. “In the
future, we expect more individuals to embrace the technology and
take full advantage of this new offering.”
PassVault
system provides convenient safe deposit box access for Mil-Way
Credit Union customers
Mil-Way
Credit Union, one of the top five credit unions in Arkansas,
recently deployed the area’s first PassVault™ system at its
newest 3,500 square foot branch in Texarkana, Texas. The system
allows members convenient access to safety deposit boxes without
the assistance of a teller. Members simply place their hands on
a wall-mounted biometric hand reader which confirms the user’s
identity based on the initial set-up template stored in the
PassVault memory, records the date and time of the visit and
admits them into the safety deposit box room.
“Members truly appreciate the added security of the new hand
entry system,” said Susie ward, branch manager, Mil-Way Texas
branch. “Offering our membership convenient access safety
deposit boxes was a top priority for us, and Diebold’s PassVault
system definitely helped us achieve that goal.”
