Diebold associates use rapid prototyping to ready ATMs for customer use
Ensuring an ATM is ready to safeguard and dispense cash to customers is a detailed process that begins in the design stage. Before any life-size ATM is ever manufactured, a prototype, or exact replica of a part, is made. To do this, Diebold uses a process called fused deposition modeling (FDM) rapid prototyping, which fabricates physical objects directly from computer-aided design (CAD) data sources.

FDM prototypes improve component design and reduce time spent modifying production injection molds, resulting in significant savings for the company.

“The FDM parts give us the accuracy and functionality we need,” said Diebold’s senior mechanical engineer Rich Lute. “We also eliminate throw-away, single-use prototypes since an FDM part serves many purposes.”

Diebold associate helps with air field dedication
Diebold’s Norm Vandecarr, a Diebold customer solutions engineer in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., played an important role at a recent dedication party for the Boca Raton Army Air Field.  He volunteered to open a Mosler file safe for members of the Boca Raton Historical Society that hadn’t been opened for more than 40 years. Diebold acquired Mosler's assets and service business in 2001.

The historical society, which works to collect and preserve information and artifacts relevant to the history of Boca Raton, organized the event to help raise funds to sustain the famed World War II air field. Once it was cracked, the safe produced Navy and Air Force documents and photos – some labeled as top secret. Many of the safe drawers were auctioned off, with the proceeds going to charity, and the documents were given to the historical society for preservation. To read the entire story, click here.
