Young cancer
patients in Milan, Italy, have a cheerful playground in the
hospital, thanks to the creativity and talent of Enzo Bordoni,
marketing and sales support manager, Diebold Italy.
The hospital,
Clinica Di Marchi, treats children affected by tumors. In 2004
and 2005, Diebold Italy donated money to the hospital’s
foundation, but Bordoni wanted to get involved in a more personal
way.
The children
who were staying at the Clinica Di Marchi did not have any place
to play, so it was decided to transform a parking lot into a fun
courtyard for the young patients. When Bordoni learned that there
would be a mural painted in the courtyard for the children, he
decided to contribute his own time and effort.
Bordoni
painted a friendly alien on the wall, and named him Opteva. The
mural was named “Il Muro Che Unisce,” or “The Wall that Joins
Together,” because it connected the children to the world outside
the hospital.

wrote a short
story about his alien, Opteva,
who stopped at an ATM in space to
get information before traveling to Earth. The ATM, also named Opteva, told the alien stories of toys and sweets and all sorts of
nice things for children. Plus, the ATM informed the alien how to
make a donation to the hospital foundation through the machine.

Ten thousand
to 20,000 copies of the story collection, called “The Wall
that Joins Together Tells…,” will be distributed in the hospital,
as well as in several elementary schools in Northern Italy. Bordoni’s efforts will undoubtedly help to improve the morale of
the young cancer-affected patients in Milan, as well as to
strengthen the Diebold name worldwide.
