Security Update - Reverse PIN Hoax
Recently, Diebold has received numerous requests for information
regarding the ability for an ATM customer to enter a PIN in
reverse during a hold-up to summon police. Diebold is aware that
the technology does exist which would allow ATM users to contact
police in an emergency by punching in their PIN (personal
identification number) in reverse, but to Diebold’s knowledge
this technology has not yet been implemented anywhere in the
United States. This technology is managed by the host and is not
controlled within the Encrypted PIN pad of the ATM.
False information has been circulated through an email claiming that
ATM’s have this functionality. According to a story published in the
St. Louis Post-Dispatch last year, bankers are opposed to the
reverse-PIN system because of safety concerns. They worry that ATM
users might hesitate or fumble while trying to enter their PINs
backwards under duress, possibly increasing the chances of violence.
In spite of the preceding position on the topic in general, Diebold
stands ready to support the needs of our customers if they choose
(or are mandated) to implement such emergency alert systems. Diebold
has been in the security business for over 146 years with experience
in securing the assets of financial institutions around the world.
Diebold recommends that all consumers exercise due caution and be
aware of their surroundings when using automated teller machines and
follow the recommended safety guidelines posted on our Consumer
Safety Website
www.atmconsumersafety.com.
