Manager, Diebold Brazil

Gerson Castanho"I have seen many different cultures within Diebold over the years, something that I feel helps to make the organization strong."

I am a Diebold associate by way of acquisition, not an uncommon way to join the company in recent years. But while most of my work life has been spent outside of the Diebold that many of you may know, I am today a Diebold associate and I look at the company’s history with pride and joy. Not only because Diebold is a great company in its own right, but also because my old company is an important part of what makes Diebold what it is today.

In Brazil, I work for a company that began as Procomp, but became part of Diebold by means of acquisition and changed its name to Diebold Procomp. Today, the company is simply known as Diebold Brazil.

I joined Procomp in 1985 as an electronic technician and have worked for the company for 23 years on many of its most important projects.

For many decades, Procomp was a very well-known company throughout Brazil. It was a technology leader, specializing in electronics and the devices it operated, such as voting machines and products for the financial community.

The very first product Procomp produced was the teller (cashier) machine. It caught on quickly here and helped our company grow enormously and earn a most respected reputation for innovation and quality. I was extremely excited by the potential this product carried. So much so, that I bet my career on it. It’s why I have stayed here to work on many other exciting projects.

My early job was to assemble the circuit boards and the equipment for the teller machine, then design how to test the equipment and then test it. It was challenging, but the reward was great. It gave me a good feeling to have been involved with a machine that proved to be so important to our company’s future and so desired by our society. I don’t know how many engineers get to say they have had such an experience, but it is every engineer’s dream to help to accomplish significant work. With this project, I fulfilled that dream.

I have gone on to watch Procomp become acquired by Diebold as the company extends its international reach. I have seen people become enthusiastic about the learning opportunities this global growth presents. Most of the people I know have been anxious to learn alongside other Diebold associates, as well as newer associates from the many companies Diebold has acquired.

However, for Diebold to continue to advance, it must continue to master the various technologies that arise in its industry. I have seen many such technological advances in my career. I feel the most important advances in technology have been in the software field because they are the advances that support all kinds of equipment that we have launched. The features of this new equipment continue to grow and satisfy our customers in many markets, including banks, governments, election systems and more.

While my career has been a rich and a full one, the accomplishment of which I am most proud is to have been one of five specialists at SID Informatica (the company I worked for prior to Procomp) who were asked to join the founders of Procomp and start up that company. That means I have been with Procomp from the very beginning and whenever I meet any of the others who founded the company I still thank them for inviting me into the company.

It is now my pleasure to watch Diebold as it continues to learn, grow and be successful.

Procomp became Diebold Procomp, but the change was not only in name, but in culture, too. I have seen many different cultures within Diebold over the years; something that I feel helps to make the organization strong. I have been to the United States, India, Italy and have met many Diebold associates all aiming at the same targets that I am.  We are all trying to make our customers proud of having Diebold as their supplier.

The only thing now that never changes at Diebold is change itself. Change is ongoing at the company and this is very good.
