A History of Firsts
We are a company used to being first in our industry, oftentimes because we created the very innovation that later became the industry standard. For example, our safes and vaults were routinely modernized and gained a committed market share in the process. And, in 42 years since we developed our first concept automated teller machine (ATM), we have maintained our industry leadership in ATM development and manufacture.
Here are just a few of the ‘firsts’ we have achieved throughout our history:
1880s – First to develop rounded vault doors and frames as a defense against prying by safecrackers
1930 – First to roll out a tear gas defense system for banks to protect them against hold-ups
1930s and 1940s – First to introduce other new concepts such as:
- Thermatic locking device
- Staggered safety vault lock
- Electrically operated Rekordesk safes
- Two-compartment money chests, which first added holdup protection to burglary protection
- Delayed control time lock
- Electric silent signal lock
- Practical rotary card file
- Production-line, low-cost, paneled and flush metal doors
- Visible binder
- Vertical visible files
- One-hour self-contained microfilming process
- Drive-up banking
1950s – Revolutionary new vault door development
